HySmart® – Membrane Bioreactor Systems for Industry
February 12, 2026
Rising water supply costs and increasing trade waste charges are driving higher operating expenditure for industrial facilities across Australia and New Zealand. At the same time, climate variability and tightening discharge requirements are forcing operators to place greater focus on water efficiency, reuse and long-term resilience.
HySMART® membrane bioreactor systems provide a proven solution for treating and recycling industrial wastewater within a compact, robust footprint. When applied purely for wastewater treatment, HySMART® MBR systems produce exceptionally high-quality effluent capable of meeting even the most stringent regulatory discharge standards. Where the technology particularly stands out, however, is its suitability for water reuse.

Treated water from a HySMART® MBR can be reused directly for a range of non-potable applications, such as selected wash-down duties and utility uses. Where higher water quality is required, downstream processes such as reverse osmosis and disinfection can be integrated to produce potable-grade or near-potable reuse water. This flexibility allows facilities to substantially reduce freshwater demand, lower trade waste volumes and gain greater control over overall site water balance.
Designed specifically for industrial environments, HySMART® membrane bioreactor systems represent one of the aerobic process options within the broader HySMART® treatment range. The MBR configuration combines advanced biological treatment with membrane filtration as the means of separating biomass from the treated water stream. This approach allows operation at high mixed liquor suspended solids concentrations, resulting in a significantly reduced footprint compared with other alternative aerobic processes.
While HySMART® MBR systems are well suited to sustainable greenfield developments requiring high-performance aerobic treatment as a precursor to reuse, they are particularly advantageous for brownfield sites where space is constrained. The modular and scalable design allows system capacity to be expanded over time as production increases or reuse objectives evolve, helping future-proof water infrastructure investments.

Automation is central to the HySMART® platform. Each system is supplied with PLC-based control and integrated remote monitoring, enabling real-time performance oversight and early identification of operational issues. This reduces operational risk, limits unplanned downtime and minimises operator attendance.
To support long-term performance and asset reliability, HySMART® systems can be supplied with optional operations and maintenance packages, including extended warranties. These options provide predictable operating costs, ongoing technical support and confidence that system performance will be maintained across the full asset life cycle.
HySMART® membrane bioreactor systems provide industrial operators with a practical, future-ready pathway to reduce operating costs, improve water security and embed sustainable water management practices into day-to-day operations.
